Defending My Position

1. The nature of my project is nature. It is about the changes in the environment that can occur over the course of a couple months.

2. I became interested in my topic by taking a picture of a tree in my front yard. It is the first picture in my series. The tree is so beautiful with all the snow on it that I don't understand why people do not like the snow. So I made it my goal to capture the beauty and change that occurs in nature.

3. The purpose of my project is to convince that the change in seasons is a remarkable and beautiful event. And it is a change that should lure people to live in this area.

4. There is no event that gave me inspiration or guidance. However, Cathy helped lead me to the final outcome of my project.

5. Cathy helped me to achieve what I wanted from my photos by suggesting that I take all my photos and arrange them into a shape, such as a tree. This advice led me to taking strips of each photo and putting them together to get one picture of the tree. At first my project was just the beauty of nature during the winter and the change to spring. But from there I started to take a series of photos of one tree in particular. Then I abandoned all other picture taking to just the tree. And then finally I cut the pictures and created one combined picture.

6. This whole experience has taught me that it takes time and hard work to evolve an idea or concept, and that it cannot be done with out going out there and taking some pictures. Now having changed my idea I feel that my photos/series is a lot stronger than it would have been without change.

7. Next? I really don't know. Most likely I will continue to take pictures of the tree and do something with them. But for now I don't know what I will do. I guess that only time will tell.

Better Idea

My new idea, which is a continuation of my past idea, is to photograph the tree in my yard and its transformation. I will continue to photograph other things I see that relate to my idea, and I will try to photograph people as well, because the habits for people change as well as nature.

Is It Spring Yet?

Picture of some flower stems that came up too early. I hope they will survive through more snow.

More Pictures

This is a puddle that I saw while I walked down my street. It was sunny and warm, melting some of the snow. I thought that this picture would be perfect for my project not only does it show the transformation from winter to spring, but it also has trees in the reflection showing life and beauty.

Two of My Pictures

These are two of the pictures that I am planning on using for the Vanguard Project. Tell me what you think. Remember my project is about the change from winter to spring so I am no where near finishing.

Thin

The series "Thin" by Lauren Greenfield is a documentary about the struggles that women go through concerning eating disorders. This series came about when Lauren went to a hospital and took pictures of the patients. Over time the girls came to be comfortable with Lauren and invited her into their homes. That way she could capture the lives of the girls. This series is journalistic. The series does not make he feel uncomfortable about anything. I think that it is wonderful that Lauren Greenfield was able to capture the lives of girls with eating disorders. I think the series is pretty well off on its own, however, if I was to improve on it I would photograph/document the reactions and actions of the girls' friends and family. I can not compare this series to anything in my life because nothing this has ever happened to me, but I think it is great that Lauren Greenfield can show girls what could happen to them.

What Will I Photograph?

Since this project is about showing people the world what we, as members of chatauqua county, see in the area that we live, for my project I have decided to photograph the change from winter to spring in Lakewood. This progression will show the beauty of Lakewood in both winter and spring. I will accomplish my task by photographing nature around Lakewood, capturing the beauty of the winter wonderland in what we call winter. Then, as the weather slowly changes and the snow melts, I will record the emergence and innocence of spring. To accomplish this task I will need cooperation from mother nature. I need the trasformation from winter to spring to be a smooth one.
